Have you ever imagined getting a letter from the future? Not just a usual one, which describes how the world changed, but the one full of gratitude that it was your generation which made the world better. Imagine that our descendants thank us for solving such crucial problems as pollution, serious diseases, poverty or wars. I bet everyone would feel proud and motivated to make a contribution to that change. We are on our way to changing the world for better but what do we need to be a part of this change?
The answer is that we shall start with ourselves by developing certain positive personal qualities and skills. Sounds pretty obvious but some people would have certain questions. They may think: “I am just an ordinary person, so I have no impact on the world around me”. However, everything in the world is connected and even if you are not a prominent scientist or a famous person, you can always become an inspiration for the others. Thus, being open-minded, loyal and kind to the others is really important for a modern person.
There is also a wide range of personal skills which one should master in order to be successful and confident. The ones that have been identified as being particularly important for people in the 21st century are:
– Critical thinking and problem solving
– Collaboration and communication
– Creativity and imagination
– Digital literacy
– Leadership and personal development
The first one of them is critical thinking, which helps to develop the ability to reason, to solve problems and to make judgments. These abilities are essential in facing and successfully handling various life challenges.
Another one is communication and collaboration. People need communicative and collaborative skills in order to share and create information and values and to transmit knowledge through society and generations.
Citizenship is the third one. It is really important to develop a sense of belonging in your society. There may be things that you support and things you disagree with but people need to have a sense of belonging and feel that they are able to participate in the discussions within society.
The next one is creativity and imagination. Clearly, every century brings new issues and new problems and we need to have new ideas to deal with them. So creativity and imagination are really important to have fresh thinking about new problems.
Another one, obviously, is digital literacy. People have access to 21st century opportunities and information through digital means, through the internet, through the web so it is a must for the modern generation to be familiar with technology.
Finally, there is leadership and personal development. We are looking forward to bringing up young men and women who are able to make a contribution to society and make a difference. This requires personal development and leadership. People should be able to choose what they like and what they want to do further in their life and set aims for the future development. The ability to lead others, to bring them together and to persuade people is also important for making a better society.
People can master these skills at any stage of life, and it is never late to do that, but the earlier you start understanding their importance and working on them, the better. As teachers, we can help our students improve even at the lessons by adding some special tasks connected with problem solving, teamwork and leadership, creativity or even ask them to use technology while doing some tasks.
Let’s hope that our students will become a part of the bright changes and deserve a letter of gratitude from the future.
